Leadership consists not in degrees of technique but in traits of character; it requires moral rather than athletic or intellectual effort, and it imposes on both leader and follower alike the burdens of self-restraint. ~ Lewis H. Lapham
We become what or who we worship. Worship has very strong connotations with obssession. So what are we so obssessed about? That is what we are worshipping. And the end-result is ... we become what we obssess about!
It was interesting to note what one of the writers in Rage ( 17th July 2008 ) referred to about girls and their occupation to "Being pretty ( which ) has become a necessity or a silent, mutual expectation; a standard put forward to look more than merely presentable" ( pg 7 ).
This piece is well written ( congrats to Sharon Ng ), and so this is my commentary on the content, and is no reflection at all on the writer.
When something becomes a "necessity", and even "a standard", then it follows logically, it is held up as something worth following. Of course, we would recoil at the thought that anyone would worship at the altar of "being gorgeous". Beauty is a blessing of God, and is to be appreciated. Beauty is not an end in itself. The end is always life and goodness. And the troops of young people whom I meet daily, and sometimes in my mentoring sessions, demonstrate a failed god of superficial beauty.
Here's a video worth thinking about ...
