Do we need to make this distinction? That there is a difference between Christian Counseling and Biblical Counseling?
I think that secret is to look at the presuppositions and how both terms - Christian and Biblical is understood.
Presuppositions
Biblical Counseling says that ultimately, it's presuppositions are derived from Scripture. This simply means that its starting point, or its basis and content is that God is sovereign. And in His sovereignty, His grace is all powerful, especially highlighted through the finished work of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This also means that the interpretive grid for the Scriptures, and ultimately, Biblical Counseling, is from the lens of Jesus. A case in point would be the post-resurrection appearance of Jesus to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and Jesus' discourse with His disciples just before His ascension. The crux of His sharing, or if you will, His main thesis, is that all of Scripture finds its fulfilment, understanding and interpretation, in Him.
Christian Counseling on the other hand has to agree with the definition of the term, 'Christian'. So who is a Christian? How does one become a Christian? Who decides that one has become a Christian? More of this in the next blog.
