My interest this morning is to write on why we find it so difficult to do the what is needed for us to move forward, achieve our goals, and presumably, be happy and satisfied in doing so.
Let's take a simple and common experience for all of us; the desire to be fit physically, a desire which is usually accompanied with the desire to be slim, and trim. This then translates into our goal of not over-eating, and having a daily exercise regime.
So what stops us in a goal which is clearly to our benefit? Why don't we do what is required for us to do to achieve our goal to be slim and trim? Why do we find ourselves doing the very things that will obstruct the goal? Things like lazing off the exercise routine, and snacking, or putting off the exercise because of the slightest reason. Like over-eating, or snacking at the wrong times which then sabotages our be slim and trim goal?
I think the answer lies in our internal world of fears, and worries. Clearly something holds us back from working towards our goal. Firstly, that goal is noble, even desirable. Who wouldn't want to be slim and trim? Yet, there appears to be some strange inner workings of the mind, motivations, fears and worries which keeps us in our current equilibrium of getting stuck almost immediately after making that resolution towards resolution.
We seem to fear or worry somewhere along the process of working through our goals. And it is these very fears and worries which keeps us stuck in defeating habits of thought and behavior and hinders our goals of improvement.
When we work through these fears and worries, and it is especially helpful when we do this with someone who can patiently walk us through this process, we have the enormous possibility of working through to victory.
